ABA demand keeps growing in 2026, and quality is what wins

3 min read · Updated October 22, 2026

More families are looking for ABA therapy than ever before. And the people who study and back this field are saying the same thing: the agencies that will thrive are the ones built on quality.

Autism prevalence and ABA demand keep rising

The CDC’s latest report from its Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network found that about 1 in 31 eight-year-old children (3.2%) were identified with autism in 2022, up from 1 in 36 in 2020.1 An industry report from Hyde Park Capital points to earlier and more consistent screening, better access to evaluations and greater awareness among parents, educators and clinicians.2

More children are getting care, too. According to the CMS ABA toolkit, the number of children with an autism diagnosis who received ABA services grew by 189% between 2021 and 2025.3

BCBA demand is at a record high

Employers posted 132,307 jobs requiring or preferring BCBA certification in 2025, up 28% from 2024, and demand has grown every year since 2010.4 The BACB counted 88,013 BCBAs and 259,577 RBTs as of October 1, 2026.5 Earlier diagnosis is good news: it means more children can start sooner, and the need for strong, well-run agencies isn’t going away.

Where demand is growing fastest

Some states saw especially strong growth in BCBA job postings from 2024 to 2025: North Carolina (+63%), New York (+62%), New Jersey (+58%), Maryland (+57%) and Georgia (+50%).4 California remains the largest market, with about 15% of national demand on its own.4

Quality is what gets rewarded

At Behavioral Health Business’s Autism Investor Summit West in May 2026, investors and operators kept coming back to one theme: quality.6 One investor on stage put it simply:

“There’s effectively unlimited demand for the services of what people in this room offer, but there’s unlimited demand only for high-quality offerings.”

Investor speaking at Autism Investor Summit West, May 2026

Speakers described quality in practice as three Ts: talent, technique and technology.6

  • Talent. Passionate, well-supported clinicians who stay, and who build a culture that keeps attracting more good people.
  • Technique. Care that delivers real outcomes, at the number of hours that makes sense for the child and the payer.
  • Technology. Agencies with a real handle on their data, able to show why theirs is a quality operation.

Speakers also pointed to steady, methodical growth and keeping promises to employees, families and payers as what’s working right now.6

Four ways to show your quality

  • Track outcomes in a simple, consistent way, and share progress with families and payers.
  • Measure staff stability. Low turnover is one of the clearest signs of a well-run agency.
  • Know your utilization. Delivering the hours families are authorized for is good care and good business.
  • Keep clean data. Timely notes, accurate billing and clear reporting build trust with every payer.

What this means for ABA agency owners

For an established agency, this is an opportunity. The demand is there. The agencies that can show their quality with clear data, keep great people, and grow at a steady pace are the ones families, payers and partners will seek out.

How we help

Each of those three Ts is something we help small and mid-size ABA agencies build. Talent: a team and caseload structure that carries the growth. Technique: clinical leadership with the time and support to focus on outcomes. Technology: real-time visibility into the whole operation, so you can show your quality in numbers. Add capital where it helps, and a good agency is ready for its next level.
